A Surprise Proposal at Black Butte Ranch | Luke + Taylor

Some proposals are sweet. Some are romantic. And then there are the ones where everything comes together so perfectly that I leave thinking, okay, that was one of my favorites ever.

Luke and Taylor's surprise proposal at Black Butte Ranch was absolutely one of those.

There was champagne, flowers, a cozy picnic tucked into one of the most beautiful places in Central Oregon, and a proposal timed just before sunset.

But getting Taylor there without giving away the surprise? That took a little teamwork.

Planning the Perfect Black Butte Ranch Proposal

Luke reached out to me before the proposal, and from there, the planning began.

And when I say we planned—I mean Luke and I were texting a lot leading up to this proposal.

We talked through the location, timing, setup, and exactly how everything would happen so that when the moment came, Luke could focus entirely on Taylor.

We even got Taylor's mom involved.

Taylor's parents have a home at Black Butte Ranch, which made the location especially meaningful. Instead of choosing somewhere simply because it photographed beautifully, Luke was proposing somewhere already connected to Taylor and her family.

Those personal details are what make surprise proposals so special.

Their Love Story Started With a "No"

Luke and Taylor originally met in Texas.

And apparently Luke knew what he wanted before Taylor did.

He asked her out.

She said no.

Not a "maybe later."

Just a flat-out no. 😂

Luckily, Luke decided to give it another shot and asked her out a second time.

This time, she said yes.

And eventually, that second chance led them all the way from Texas to a sunset walk at Black Butte Ranch in Oregon—with an engagement ring waiting at the end.

I'd say asking twice worked out pretty well for him.

Setting Up a Sunset Picnic at Black Butte Ranch

Before Luke and Taylor arrived, I headed out to prepare everything.

I created an intimate picnic setup with flowers, pillows, and champagne, tucked into the landscape and ready for them just before sunset.

Timing is everything with a surprise proposal.

I wanted Luke and Taylor to arrive while there was still beautiful light, but close enough to sunset that we could photograph the proposal and then take advantage of that soft Central Oregon evening light afterward.

Once everything was ready, all that was left to do was wait.

She Had No Idea

She said yes.

And I got to photograph the entire thing.

This is one of my favorite parts about photographing surprise proposals. There's no recreating that reaction later.

The realization.

The shock.

The laughter.

The tears.

The way you look at each other immediately afterward when it sinks in that you're actually engaged.

It's completely unscripted.

And that's exactly what I love photographing.

Champagne, Sunset & That "We Just Got Engaged" Feeling

After Taylor said yes, there was finally no secret left to keep.

They could slow down, pop the champagne, enjoy the picnic, and take in what had just happened.

We spent the rest of the evening photographing them around Black Butte Ranch as the sun dropped lower.

There's a completely different energy when I photograph couples immediately after a proposal.

You don't have to manufacture excitement or connection.

They've literally just gotten engaged.

They're laughing. They're looking at the ring. They're calling family. They're replaying what just happened.

All I have to do is document it.

One of My Favorite Surprise Proposals Yet

I've photographed a lot of incredible moments, but Luke and Taylor's proposal is easily one of the best surprise proposals I've planned and photographed to date.

Part of that was the setting.

Black Butte Ranch is ridiculously beautiful.

Part of it was the picnic and that perfect evening light.

But mostly, it was Luke and Taylor.

Knowing how much thought Luke put into creating this moment for her made watching everything come together even better.

And I love that Taylor's mom got to secretly be part of making it happen.

From Luke getting turned down the first time he asked Taylor out in Texas to getting down on one knee years later in Oregon, I'd say this story turned out exactly the way it was supposed to.
