There is something extra special about a wedding that isn't just about two people coming together, but two entire families becoming one.

Kelsey and Brett's August wedding at Shepherdsfield in Sisters, Oregon was exactly that.

Surrounded by their children, family, and closest friends, they celebrated on one of the most beautiful properties in Central Oregon. With wide-open views, towering trees, and even glimpses of Smith Rock from parts of the property, Shepherdsfield created an incredible backdrop for a relaxed summer wedding.

But as beautiful as the setting was, my favorite part of the day was watching these two families simply enjoy being together.

A Relaxed Morning at Shepherdsfield

When I arrived at Shepherdsfield, everything already had that calm, easy feeling you hope for on a wedding day.

I headed in to greet Kelsey, who was getting ready alongside her bridesmaids and the mothers. Hair and makeup were underway, everyone was talking and laughing, and there wasn't that frantic energy you sometimes find on wedding mornings.

Upstairs, Brett was getting ready with his groomsmen.

Brett served our country as a Marine, and several of the men standing beside him on his wedding day had served alongside him. Knowing the history and friendship between them made photographing those moments even more meaningful.

There is something powerful about seeing friendships that have been through so much continue into entirely new chapters of life.

Two Families Becoming One

One of my favorite things about photographing blended-family weddings is the kids.

Weddings can feel incredibly formal to adults, but children have a way of completely ignoring that.

And I love it.

Throughout Kelsey and Brett's wedding, the kids had what basically felt like their own giant Central Oregon playground.

They climbed trees.

They played badminton and tag.

They ran around the property together.

And, of course, they ate cupcakes.

There was always something happening in the background.

Those are the photographs that become so valuable later—the kids laughing together, running through the grass in wedding clothes, sneaking another cupcake, and completely enjoying themselves while their families celebrate around them.

Someday they're going to be much older, looking through these photographs.

They'll get to see themselves on the day their family became something new.
